Break it like Beckham

As you all know by now - whether or not you care about soccer - David Beckham has been all but ruled out of the World Cup through injury. You all know this because it's being treated like the biggest story of the tournament. It has appeared on virtually every news program on CNN International (not just World Sport).

What's funny is that the segments always play out in the same way. Soccer-ignorant anchors act like the world is coming to an end. Then they cut to a guest analyst who points out a number of key facts:

- Beckham turns 35 in May.
- He hasn't been playing a key role for England during World Cup qualification.
- It's far from certain that he would have gone to South Africa at all.

I feel bad for him because unlike some of his money-grubbing countrymen, he actually cares about England and always plays his heart out for his nation. But let's not pretend he would have been this difference between a repeat of 1966 and yet another quarterfinal penalty-shootout loss to Portugal.
